Competitive applications must have thorough documentation of institutional commitment to the applicant. This includes a written commitment from the Department Chair for five full years of academic protection and funding, as described in the Program Description.
The National Advisory Committee will evaluate each applicant using standard NIH criteria, and each application will be scored in the standard way. The applications will be funded, in order of priority score, to the limit of available funds. Priority score will depend not only on the science proposed, but the qualities of the candidate and mentor, and the training plan which all should reflect the likelihood of success of the candidate. The priority score will not be provided to applicants, but written comments will be transmitted to each applicant.
