Excellent mentoring is key to the development of successful physician scientists. Applicants should identify strong mentors prior to applying for the program. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Program Director (Dr. Dean) for advice in this regard, if unable to identify a suitable mentor at their location.
We strongly encourage applicants to explore opportunities that are outside their fellowship institutions to gain more diversity with respect to research and clinical aspects of critical care. The program is particularly interested in talented young faculty leaving their sponsoring Department for the first two years in order to obtain specialized training, returning to the sponsoring Department for the final three years of the program. This is not, however, a requirement of the PCCSDP.
For inquiries from potential mentors or academic advisors of young faculty, please contact the program director at mike.dean@hsc.utah.edu indicate "PCCSDP Mentor Inquiry" as the subject of the email (this will avoid spam filters and assure a prompt response from Dr. Dean).
The criteria for selection of mentors includes:
- A record of outstanding scientific accomplishment
- A strong funding history (preferably from NIH)
- Scientific interests relevant to pediatric critical care
- Demonstrated excellence in training young faculty scientists
